It is National Beer Day! Beer is one of the oldest crafted beverages in the world! And believe it or not, it makes a fabulous addition to many recipes. In honor of the day, I have put together 9 great recipes that include beer!
When you think of beer, you may think of chips and dip or pizza, but it actually makes a great cooking ingredient! It can add flavor to a dish in the same manner that wine can. Compared with wine, beer is lower in alcohol and lighter in flavor and has spices that can really complement your food.
Just like white and red wine, light and dark beers have distinct flavors and aromas, and you need to pair the right type with the right dish. As a general rule, use wheat beers for chicken and seafood; choose ale, porter or stout when cooking pork, beef or lamb.
Did you know? Beer is a fantastic replacement for stock or wine in a recipe!
Beer is also great for marinating. Since it doesn’t have as much acidity as wine, you can marinate longer. It not only adds flavor, but helps caramelize and brown the meat.
A good rule of thumb is not to interchange beers if the recipe calls for something specific. If you have a very bitter beer, you have to allow time for the bitterness to break down or you may not enjoy the end result. If this happens, just add a touch of sugar, brown sugar or honey to balance out the flavors.
Did you know? It is a US law that people cannot actually be shown consuming an alcoholic beverage on television!
Beer is the second most popular beverage in the world, beaten only by tea. On average, 7 million glasses of Guinness are sold every day.
Did you know? Pabst Brewery produced the first six-pack of beer in the 1940s. Why did they choose six? Their studies found that six cans were the ideal weight for the average housewife to carry home from the store!
Believe it or not, beer also works for dessert. Use a lighter flavored beer and it will pair quite well with chocolate!
Beer bread is an Irish classic that uses beer instead of yeast. It is simple to make and results in a very dense, moist, chewy loaf.
So in honor of the day, make something amazing with beer! Happy National Beer Day!
