Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day- a look at Ukrainian eggs!

Today is Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day!  Do you have an unusual talent that not many other folks have?  This is the day to celebrate it!  My unique talent that is not so common, is that I can create unusual Ukrainian eggs.  So in celebration of the day, I thought I’d bring to you the art of Pysanka or Ukrainian Eggs from my Etsy Shop!

Those of you that are regular readers know that I pretty much do anything craft-wise.  But I do have few specialties.  One of them is Ukrainian Egg Art, or Pysanky.  I love doing anything with lots of details and Pysanky, as you can see, is a very detailed art.  True Ukrainian eggs are full of symbolism and usually tell a story.

My eggs don’t necessarily tell a story and are very Americanized, but the process and the attention to tiny detail are what keep me enthralled.

I work with all sizes of fresh eggs including chicken eggs, duck eggs, goose eggs, turkey eggs, rhea eggs and even ostrich eggs!  I get most of them from my mother or sister- they have chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys.  If I want to work extra large, I can order rhea and ostrich eggs over the internet.

This is a kistka.  It is a little metal funnel that you put bees wax in the top of, heat over an open candle flame, so that the wax melts and then using the point, draw the wax onto the egg.

Each egg is made by using a process of melting bees wax and adding colors of dyes.  If you would like to see how it is actually done, check out my tutorial for Ukrainian Eggs.  Most of my eggs take about 10 to 12 hours to complete and each one of them is an original, one of a kind piece.

Learning the art of creating Ukrainian Eggs took a few years of patient practice.  Lots of rejects, lots of broken eggs, lots of color issues.  But I definitely love the challenge of creating something that is totally unique.

So what is your unique talent?  I would love to hear about it!

How beautiful! I grew up in a German-Polish neighborhood and I remember the unbelievably precise drawings on the eggs. I applaud you talent. Just lovely. I saw your link posted at the Share It One More Time Party.
