Today is National Goth Day! Let’s put all the gloom and doom aside to day. This is your opportunity to give your favorite goth a hug! Everyone could use a little love, right?
What is a goth? Well, this unusual subculture began in the early 1980’s in England. It is an offshoot of the “punk” subculture and it’s influences are from 19th century gothic literature and horror films. The goth has associated goth tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion.
From an outsider’s perspective, a goth wears heavy eyeliner, black nail polish, clunky boots and black clothing. And they hate everything. But, with a bit of research, I soon discovered that I may have the look right, but the attitude of a true goth is anything but morose.

Goth is not just dark and black…
Real goths are not depressing and suicidal. Goths are fun to be around and aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves every so often. Their styles of dress range from deathrock, punk, and Victorian styles, or combinations of the above, most often with dark clothing, makeup, and hair. Contrary to popular belief, Goths don’t all dress alike. They like to create their own unique style.

Goth is an individual style…
Goths are often intelligent, are very artistic and love to be unique and individual. Many Goths are very successful in their fields and choose this style and way of life as a means of setting themselves apart from the average person.

…so who is a “Poser”?
There are those that consider themselves Goth that concentrate on the dark side of life. You can find them hanging out at Hot Topic and looking depressed. A true Goth calls them a “Poser”.

As with any subculture, you cannot define the whole group by the actions of a few. In general, Goths just want to live in their own style. Be it not the popular way to go, then so be it.
