Established in 1955, the National Child Safety Council (NCSC) is the oldest and largest nonprofit charitable organization entirely dedicated to the safety of children. Their friendly mascot, Safetypup, is being celebrated today! In honor or NCSC and Safety Pup, I found 9 unique products that can help keep your children safe!
More children die in the United States from accidents than all the communicable diseases combined. NCSC’s mission is to reduce, through prevention education, the number of children dying from accidents and help save lives.
NCSC’s nationally recognized superhero mascot is named Safetypup®! Safetypup visits schools nationwide and is the spokesperson for child safety worldwide.
NCSC provides over 300 different pieces of educational material about child safety, drug abuse prevention, and missing children. For more information, please visit their website- National Child Safety Council.
In honor of the day, I found 8 unique products that can help keep your kids safe, along with some interesting facts about Safetypup and child safety.
Did you know? Unintentional injuries account for 9.2 million emergency room visits and 12,175 deaths each year in children ages 19 and under. Falls are the leading cause of home injuries, followed by unintentional poisonings.
Safetypup® was first introduced in a new conference in 1985 by actress, Rita Moreno, who served as a spokesperson for NCSC. He was created as a “superhero” to be an unthreatening and positive role model for teaching safety to children. He has since proven to be a successful learning tool used by law enforcement officers and teachers across the country.
Law officers have used their puppet versions of Safetypup® for presentations to children in hundreds of schools. Many hospitals and children’s organizations use the Safetypup® character in their safety programs.
Fun Fact: You will also find Safetypup® on various size milk cartons with educational safety tips. This technique distributes his picture and message to billions of school lunchrooms and homes across the country.
In these modern days, it is good to consider sharing these computer safety tips for children:
- Personal Information-Don’t give out personal information without your parents’ permission. Do not share your last name, home address, school name, or telephone number.
- Passwords– Don’t share your password with anyone but your parents. When you use a public computer such as the library, be sure to logout!
- Photos– Do not put photos or videos online without getting your parents’ permission.
- Friends– Do not meet an online friend unless you have your parents’ permission. Not everyone is who they say they are!
- Bullying. Don’t send or respond to mean or insulting messages. Tell your parents if you receive one. If something happens online that makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to your parents or to a teacher at school.
Did you know? In a 1998 study of parents’ worries by pediatricians at the Mayo Clinic, nearly three-quarters of parents said they feared their children might be abducted. One-third of parents said this was a frequent worry — a degree of fear greater than that held for any other concern, including car accidents, sports injuries, or drug addiction.
Teach your child the power of “No.” Child predators are very good at seeking out children who may be afraid or reluctant to oppose an adult. Talk to your child and tell them to trust their instincts. If they do not feel comfortable or is scared around someone, to tell that person in a very loud voice, “No!”
If they are asked to keep a secret or go somewhere with that person without you, they need to tell you immediately. Child safety education is so incredibly important.
So, check out some of these great products and consider additional safety education for both you and your child. Safetypup is here to help! Happy Safetypup Day!
