Today is Garage Sale Day! Falling on the second Saturday of every August, it is a great day to get rid of some of that junk you have around the house. In honor of the day, I found a few great tips and two hilarious videos to put a smile in your Saturday.
Did you know? Here in the United States the average weekly revenue for all yard sales combined is over 4 million dollars! That’s a whole lot of used junk! But like the old saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
Except with the case of poor Batman. Check out what happens when Robin does not get that raise in his allowance…
Are you a Buyer?
Don’t show up at 5:00 AM knocking on their door wanting a sneak peek. Rude! Don’t show up with a $100 bill or a credit card. Both are relatively useless at a yard sale. Bring lots of ones and fives and a big smile.
Avoid purchasing mattresses (bed bugs), car seats (used may not be safe), helmets (very possibly have already been in an accident), cribs (lots of recalls), painted older toys (lead in the paint).
No, you may not use their restroom! No, you may not walk all over their grass. And please keep your children from climbing all over their lawn mower or exploring their back yard while you are shopping! Respect other folks property and they will respect you in return!
Are you a Seller?
Be sure to put prices on everything! Folks do not like to ask, and if they are anything like me, they will simply put the item down and move on.
Put like items together and make it easy to browse. Don’t just open the garage door and expect folks to climb over the lawn mower to get to that box of Elvis albums.
Speaking of the lawn mower, if you aren’t selling it, you might want to cover it up or move it elsewhere. Folks will be asking for the price all day.
Clean your stuff! Nobody wants your old dust bunnies or your pillow that the dog yakked on. Seriously.
And be sure to advertise! A popular way to advertise for free now is to use Craig’s List. But there is nothing better than a good eye-catching road sign.
Need a few ideas?
Now get out there and go check out a few garage sales in honor of the day. Who knows? You just might find that perfect velvet Elvis painting to finish up the decor in your living room!
One can only hope!
