Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day- celebrate the unusual!

Today we are celebrating unusual musical instruments!  Why? Well, because we can!  Ever heard of  a Thumb Piano, Lute, Mandolin, African Talking Drum, or a Harpsichord?  You can pretty much make music on anything.

This day is set aside to look at musical instruments that stray a bit from the norm. So, I went to the vast handmade shopping site at Etsy to see what Etsy artists are currently offering in unusual musical instruments.  Come see what I found!

Did you know? Music is used in waiting rooms and when you get put on hold because it gives the illusion that less time has passed by.

Did you know? Elvis Presley’s house Graceland was named after original owner’s daughter, Grace. It is the second most visited private residence in the United States, beat only by the White House.

Did you know? The harmonica is the world’s best-selling musical instrument.

Did you know? There is one musical piece that has no sound at all. It is called 4 minutes 33 seconds,”written” by the American composer John Cage in 1954. A pianist sits at the piano and plays absolutely nothing for exactly 4 minutes and 33 seconds.  Really?

And finally, let’s finish off Uncommon Instruments Awareness Day with a short, but amazing performance by one of my favorite uncommon instrument performers, STOMP.  This 8-member group uses everything from wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, lighters, and other unusual objects to create amazing music.  Check it out!

Make you happy doesn’t it?

There is a group at Disney World called The JaMMitors that use trash cans and brooms and things to play music. Here is a link to a video of them:
